STORE MIX 095: HONEY JUJU

SHE'S BACK: ELUSIVE, MYSTERIOUS... ANNOYING? WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF HONEY JUJU. THE MELBOURNE-NATIVE CONTINUES TO SWEEP US OFF OUR FEET WITH A STORE MIX DESIGNED TO INSPIRE THE PURSUIT OF EUPHORIC HIGHS ON A SUPER YACHT STATIONED SOMEWHERE UNNECESSARILY REMOTE AND EXCESSIVELY INDULGENT.

Where others self-deprecate with a mumbled apology or goofy joke, Honey Juju – star of the decidedly unhinged ‘Party Ready or Party Delusional?’ OUTLOOK campaign – won over the LN-CC creative team with her deadpan declaration that she’s “a dumb f****** bitch with one brain cell”. Don’t be fooled, the stylist, model and visual artist is whip-smart and refreshingly self-aware, describing her style as a deranged mix of novelty and runway pieces in a prompt and considered email thread. Juju is that rare gem of workplace lore; likeable and professional, you get the feeling her company would engender both your best work and your wildest night. The Duchess will be in sunny Australia this Christmas, enjoying a lady of leisure lifestyle to the sounds of East Atlanta Santa by Gucci Mane, but if you’re hoping to imbue your life with eau de Honey Juju, head to a Shygirl or Casual Gabberz show in something sexy, perhaps a slinky Rick Owens top, tracksuit pants, heavy accessories and an obligatory knife boot.

“This playlist makes me look like I have a single Adidas Originals tracksuit with cigarette burns in it that I’ve owned for the past 20 years and wear every day… and it’s honestly not far off.”

To the untrained eye, Juju’s choices seem chaotic but there is an intuitive thread of continuity to her personal style and musical tastes. Musically, she leaps from genre to genre, but everything has to be fast and upbeat. She cites Hedkandi, Ricky Martin, Keira Knightley in Bend it Like Beckham, Jersey Shore and Magaluf as sources of inspiration, each reference embodying an overt naïveté or OTT-ness, in some cases both. With a wide range of references, it’s unsurprising that Honey Juju struggled to narrow down her Store Mix choices, but her strong sense of self is evident in her curation: a hard, fun post-party high comedown. The Duchess will be in sunny Australia this Christmas, enjoying a lady of leisure lifestyle to the sounds of East Atlanta Santa by Gucci Mane, but if you’re hoping to imbue your life with eau de parfum Honey Juju, head to a Shygirl or Casual Gabberz show in something sexy, perhaps a slinky Rick Owens top, tracksuit pants, heavy accessories and a knife boot (always).
